How to choose a retaining wall contractor

Retaining walls are structures. Before you hire, ask:

  1. Do you build or repair retaining walls specifically?

Ask to see photos of comparable walls you’ve built, of a similar height and material.

  2. What caused the problem, and how does your plan fix it?

For repairs, a good contractor explains the cause before proposing a fix.

  3. How will you handle drainage?

Ask about the gravel, pipe and outlets. See our drainage guide.

  4. What base and reinforcement will you use?

For taller walls, or walls holding up a driveway or structure, ask whether an engineer will design it.

  5. Who handles permits?

Requirements vary by city and county. Confirm who checks and applies.

  6. Are you licensed and insured for this work?

Licensing rules vary by state and locality. Ask for proof of insurance and check any licence with the issuing body.

  7. What does the quote include?

Get a written, itemised quote. Our cost guide lists what to look for.

  8. What warranty do you offer?

Ask what it covers, for how long, and whether it’s in writing.

Our listings show what we found evidence for. They don’t replace your own checks. See how we review contractors.
